Gritober is Upon Us
October is ENF Month, and this year, we’ll be celebrating grit. Grit is the will to persevere in the face of long odds. Educators have turned it into an acronym: G for guts or growth, R for resilience, I for integrity, and T for tenacity.

The grit movement started a few years ago when psychologist Angela Duckworth studied people in challenging situations, including National Spelling Bee participants, rookie teachers in tough neighborhoods, and West Point cadets.

Incredible Abandoned Elks Building in Pennsylvania

The Elks are one of the oldest social clubs in the country, founded in 1868. One of the earlier lodges for its members was built in 1916 in New Castle, Pennsylvania and stood for almost 100 years.
Abandoned America photographer Matthew Christopher got these incredible shots of the interior of New Castle Elks Lodge in 2011, less than a month before the building was demolished. Though he came across the site accidentally, it’s almost as if fate drove him to capture the building’s glory before its destruction.

Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Elks #2444:  Member Gail Reavis was named “Honorary Founder” of the Elks National Foundation at a recent Elks Lodge meeting. Inaugural Ball Welcomes the New Elk Year

The 2015 Inaugural Ball was the celebration of the new Mission Viejo Elks Lodge officers, significant others and a kick-off of the New Year. Exalted Ruler, Camacho Alvarez, and First Lady Mary Ann welcomed over 130 members and guests to the Inaugural Ball with a cocktail party, Officers March then a wonderful dinner. Kitchen Crew Leader, Mark Shelton and his team prepared a fantastic dinner of shrimp scampi, filet mignon, twice baked potatoes followed by New York Cheesecake with strawberries.  Lodge photographer, Mike Marquis, was in charge of all photos of the Officer March as each Officer entered the ballroom with their wives, husbands or significant others, all announced by Lodge Secretary and PDDGER Norm Jones. After dinner, Street Corner Symphony band played hits that got everyone onto the dancefloor. Again we thank the Girl Scout Troop #262 for their service for dinner and all the volunteers that help set-up and teardown the event.  The “Black and Silver” event kicks-off another year of charity and giving that the Elks are known for.
