KIDS KNOW THE MEANING OF AMERICANISM AND LOVE OF COUNTRY
Saddleback and Capistrano Valley Unified School District elementary and intermediate schools recently participated in the annual Elks sponsored National Essay writing competition. Two divisions …fifth and sixth graders and seventh and eighth graders submitted essays entitled “What I can do to promote Americanism and love of country.”
One hundred seventy-two (172) Entries were judged by a panel of fifteen essay committee members of the Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Elks. The top three scoring essays in each division were sent to the Elks Orange Coast District for the next round of judging for the ten Orange County Lodges. Winning essays in that judging will travel up to State and then National competitions. Plaques will be awarded by the Grand Lodge for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place for national winning essays in Division I and Division II. Plaques will be sent to the respective State Associations for presentation to the winning Local Lodges. The winning boys and girls in the National judging will be invited with their families to the Elks national convention in July. There they will read their essays to the assemblage on the convention floor and receive their award plaques.
Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Elks members serving on the essay judging committee were: California, Hawaii Public Relations Chairman Andy Costello, Past Lodge Presidents Hal Mattson, Charlie Hart, and Pat Martino, Barbara Martino, Past Mission Viejo Mayor Gail Reavis, Jim and Jinnae Wessling, Sandy Jacobs, Clint McDonald, Sandie McClure, Shirley Bauchiero, Kathy Griffin, and Lynette Holms. Lodge essay contest Chairperson and Past Lodge President Irene Romero said of the judging, “Reading these essays is an amazing experience. I wish we could give awards to all these children.” Romero added, “It’s hard to believe these children are only fifth, sixth and seventh and eighth graders. Most of them really have a wonderful respect for our country and expressed some quite interesting ways they plan to promote Americanism.”
