Elk of the Month Janet Griffin

The Elk of the Month for August was initiated 4 years ago, but if it feels like you have seen Janet Griffin around the lodge longer that would be because she was already volunteering with our Ladies. Her husband, Ed, was already a member and she decided that she could do more as a member and decided to join herself.  Although the work that Janet does each month editing our award-winning bulletin is behind the scenes, it does not go unnoticed.  Janet has been a volunteer in our kitchen for various events over the years and as a member of the ladies she has also helped with their annual fashion show. If you run in to Janet this month, please thank her and let her know how much we apricate her contributions.

February 2018
Our Elk of the Month for February is no stranger to hard work and volunteering. Alan Harkness is one of the hardest working Charity BINGO team members in the lodge. Since his initiation in August 2013, Alan immediately found a home supporting Charity BINGO; working early Wednesday morning set-up to organizing games and packages, to calling the early-bird games to late night clean-up and teardown. Charity BINGO co-manager and Trustee, Larry Colgan, states that “Alan will do anything asked of him to make every Wednesday successful for the lodge and our community of players”.

Part of Alan’s working career centered at the SCE San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant where he was a supervisor until SCE decommissioned the power plant. Now, when Alan isn’t calling BINGO numbers, Alan spends his time giving guided tours and nature walks in conjunction with the Dana Point Ocean Institute.  But there is more to Charity BINGO than just every Wednesday. On numerous occasions Alan has joined the Charity BINGO team at Camp Pendleton to serve dinner at the Summer Beach Party and most recently serving lunch to our troops during the holidays. Next time you see Alan, thank him for all his hard work on Wednesdays. Good luck…Alan never sits still, but you can give him a wave as he jets in between the players tables. He is busy selling the next game! Thanks Alan for all your hard work at OUR lodge.

December 2017

He’s a quiet guy with a huge heart and an original California Kid, born in Hollywood. Our Elk of the Month for December is Steve Cagnacci. Almost any night of the week you can spot Steve and his wife Barbara at the lodge visiting with members, volunteering for an event or attending almost every Tuesday Lodge meeting to stay informed. When Steve joined the Elks in 2014 he checked almost every box on the application as a volunteer. Steve has volunteered to set-up most major events including New Year’s Eve Party, Easter and Mother’s Day Brunches. Steve has joined us for the past couple of years at the Orange County Rescue Mission in Tustin for the “Party in the Park” and Kids Carnivals. As a past restaurant chef, Steve feels right at home working in the Kitchen or sweating over the grill. At the Party in the Park at OCRM, Steve grilled hamburgers for over 300 residents. He grilled and grilled and grilled…and we never heard a peep out of him. Steve is retired and a Veteran of the United States NAVY. Steve and Barbara have a special needs son to care for, but give back to our lodge and community when they can. Congratulations to Steve for his steady contributions to the lodge. WE do greatly appreciate it.

October 2017
Our Elk of the Month for October is thirteen year member Diana Wilson. Diana is a Past President of the Elk's Ladies Club and is currently the Corresponding Secretary of that club. She recently retired from chairing the Lodge Piggy Bank Committee after faithfully serving in that position for eight (8) years. Additionally, she served as Lodge Tiler, an officer position she held for eight (8) years. You may wonder why Diana has not been named Elk of the Month during the past eight years. By statute, a member cannot be named Elk of the Month while serving in an officer position. Diana continues to work as a regular at Wednesday night Bingo and in the kitchen. She volunteers at many Lodge charity events, the most recent  being the Carnival at the Rescue Mission. Diana exemplifies the true meaning of Elkdom, volunteering at every opportunity and excelling at everything she does. When you see Diana at the Lodge, be sure to congratulate her and say "Thank you, well done."

August 2017

Our Elk of the Month for August was born in Columbia as one of 17 children.  Sam Velez moved to the United States as a young child and quickly assimilated with the rest of his family.  He now lives in Mission Viejo and we were lucky enough for him to join our lodge in October of last year, just under a year ago.  Staying close with his family he has already proposed at least one of his brother’s, Juan, for membership into our lodge. As the unofficial “assistant bar manager” you can find Sam in the lounge almost any evening ready to walk the bar tenders to their cars, help clean the popcorn machine, bus the tables or change a keg.  Sam also contributes handyman work too, fixing floor tiles behind the bar and replacing counter tiles outside by the BBQ area. If there is anything that you need help with, you only need to ask and Sam will be there to help.  Showing up for many events to help support the lodge, he also recently walked in the 4th of July parade with us to help show his Elk pride.  We are proud to have Sam as a member of our lodge and our Elk family, please thank him next time that you see him!
